Thank you for the classroom library donations

October 22nd, 2009

Thank you to Kaylene’s family, Maria’s family and Julia’s family for their generous donation of books to add to our classroom library.

Some of our new additions include Catching Fire which is the second book of the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins as well as the New York Times Bestseller series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clarke. Also new to our collection is Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl series (also on the New York Times Bestseller list), R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps and Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic, Treasure Island. We’ve also added a variety of titles from the Babysitters, Goosebumps and Beverly Clearly.

We have a wide range of reading abilities and interest  in our class. Everything from Beverly Clearly to Gordon Korman to Stephenie Meyer, Charlotte’s Web to Chicken Soup for the Soul to Life of Pi, short stories to graphic novels to informational texts.  If you have any books or magazines that your family is done with, please consider donating them to our classroom library. Thank you in advance for your continued support.

If you would like to earn extra raffle tickets for our next scholastic gift certificate draw, please see me at second recess. I need volunteers to organize our classroom library.

Reading Ravens starts today

October 19th, 2009

As part of the literacy program, students will be participating in an online bulletin board to discuss literature. As a member of readingravens.ca, each student will login using their school user name and password which will allow them access to the literature currently being studied by the grade 7 and 8′s. Each student only has access to the reading program they are involved in and consequently are unable to view other groups, classes or grades.

The electronic bulletin board is designed to elicit meaningful talk about literature. Students are required to respond to questions being posed by their teachers while also commenting on their peer’s posts. Since each student is identified by their user name (a numeric code), they are able to share their opinions and thoughts openly and are more willing to actively participate in discussions. Although the writing is completed online, students are expected to follow a code of language ethics which include formal writing format (no text messaging), appropriate language and respectful dialog.

If having access to a computer at home is an issue, students will be given the opportunity to complete their posts during a lunch in one of the school computer labs.

STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO FINISH THEIR 3 POSTS BY THU OCT 21

Some students will respond more than the required 3 posts. Please pick the best 3 posts (Question 1, Question 2, and a response to a peer) and copy and paste them into a word document (or Google doc.) Please print out the responses you would like me to mark and hand it in on Friday.

Please make sure you include your name, your class, and your student number at the top of your assignment.

If you have any questions, please see me at second recess or afterschool.

Have a Great Long Weekend! Win Twenty Bucks (for the Cafeteria)

October 8th, 2009

Have a great four-day weekend and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family if you celebrate it.

Don’t forget to read.

Research shows that “the more a reader reads, the more her reading rate will improve.” (Kylene Beers, When Kids Can’t Read, pg 208) Why is improving a reading rate important? Think of it this way: if it takes you twice as long to read as the average student, it will take you twice as long to finish your work.

If you have some spare time, why not learn how to type properly.

The faster you can type, the easier it is to finish your reading responses and other homework. To motivate you to type faster, I will be offering a $20 gift certificate for the cafeteria if you can type faster than I can. (You must use proper typing technique. See me for contest details.)

To help you practice, I’ve added two free typing websites to the sidebar on the right. (If you find any other good typing websites, please let me know and I’ll add them to the list.)

Which book or magazine should we get for our classroom library?

October 5th, 2009

UPDATE (Mon Oct 19, 2009) – The October Scholastic order was distributed today. Based on the comments below, I decided to buy the Guiness World Records 2010 for our class. The free books that we got from Scholastic were The Best Ghost Stories Ever and Jerry Spinelli’s Smiles to Go. The new books are in our class library now and will be available to be signed out in November. (The other books in the front box, including Bone #3-9 can now be signed out if you have a large ziplock bag.)

Last week, the LDHSS School Council started the QSP Magazine fundraiser. The school earn great profits with the QSP Magazine program and proceeds from this fundraising drive are to go to the school library.

In addition, the October Scholastic flyer is going home today. The Teen Readers Club (TRC) offers “hot bestsellers, edgy new fiction, tough topics, and more of what teens want to read.” Your scholastic order helps earn free books for our classroom library.

Which QSP magazine or Scholastic book should we get for our classroom? Please leave a comment. Do not use your real name or your comment will not be published. Please use your computer username.

Please note:

  • QSP magazine orders must be in by Friday October 16, 2009.
  • Scholastic book orders must be in by Thursday, Oct 5, 2009

Goodbyes, Hellos, and Forty-Five dollars.

October 2nd, 2009

Today was the first day that the grade seven/eight split classes (E78 and R78) were unsplit. We said goodbye to our grade seven friends from E78 and we welcomed new faces in E8B, R7C and R7F.

Forty-five dollars in Scholastic book certificate coupons are being raffled off today and on Monday. Three students in each class will walk away with a $4.99 book certificate. The October scholastic book order will be sent home on Monday and the order will be placed on Friday October 9.

The next draw will happen before the November scholastic order. Congratulations to the six students who won today and good luck to everyone else. The more you read, the better your chances of winning.
